Inspection of Cat island-Tashirojima①

Mar 19, 2024

Do you know Tashirojima in Miyagi Prefecture, which is famous as the cat island?

I visited last week on March 13th (Wednesday) for an inspection.

In fact, you can visit this island on a day trip from Akishima City (Tama area), Tokyo.

The location is like the following. It is a small island with a population of about 50 people, and there are more cats than people.

Now, let’s look back on the day’s route.

【Sendai Station ~ Ishinomaki Station】

First, take the Shinkansen and arrive at Sendai Station at 10:05.

Afterwards, head to Ishinomaki on the JR Senseki Line/Senseki Tohoku Line.

The duration is approximately 1 hour.

・Departs from Sendai Station 10:18
・Arrival at Ishinomaki Station 11:16

From Sendai to Ishinomaki, you can either take the JR train or the express bus, but it takes about an hour and a half for both the local train (approximately 30 stations along the way) and the bus, so be sure to check the time before taking the rapid train. I think the Senski Tohoku Line is recommended.

On the way, I was able to see the Japan Air Self-Defense Force Blue Impulse from the train around Matsushima.

【Ishinomaki Station ~ Ishinomaki Central(Chuo) Terminal (boarding area)】

There are two places for boats bound for Tashirojima: the Central Terminal and the Kadonowaki Terminal, and you can choose either one, but the Central Terminal is the one closest to Ishinomaki Station. Getting there is a 15-minute walk, a 5-minute taxi ride (approximately 1,000 yen), or a bus (few). I tried my best to walk.

There were strong winds that day, the weather forecast was a little off, and there was a little snow. My folding umbrella overturned over and over again, and I almost broke down, but I kept walking, thinking I was going to see the cat.

When I finally arrived at the central terminal, I discovered a surprising fact…

to be continued.
