The Albert Schweitzer Foundation is committed to animal welfare and animal rights.
The focus is on animals in food production, because it is in this area that humans cause by far the most suffering and death. Every year, nearly 800 million farm animals are slaughtered in Germany, even though this is not necessary for a safe and healthy food supply in this country. Their goal is the abolition of factory farming and a wide spread of the vegan lifestyle.
A society that avoids animal suffering as much as possible will not come overnight. Therefore, they also see intermediate steps on the way there as success. Thus, they advocate for less animal products to be produced and used, and are committed to less torturous breeding, keeping and killing of so-called farm animals.
They negotiate (if necessary with public pressure) with companies in the food industry so that they raise their animal welfare standards or expand the vegan offer. Thanks to our good networking with other organizations, they also participate in international campaigns. Volunteer action groups of the Albert Schweitzer Foundation are active in numerous German cities. Since 2017, there has been a subsidiary foundation in Poland based in Warsaw.
They also seek dialogue with stakeholders from politics and society. In addition, they initiate or support important legal proceedings in animal protection. They inform the media and the public in a well-founded way and show alternatives for consumers, for example with the Vegan Taste Week.
Their work is intended to contribute to a more respectful treatment of animals. This is made possible by donations, which is why they strive for the greatest possible effectiveness and transparency.
